The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council (MMTC) held its 2011 Broadband and Social Justice Policy Summit last week. The Summit successfully highlighted three important priorities in broadband policy today, including:
1) Achieving universal broadband access, adoption and informed use.
2) Meeting the nation’s spectrum needs.
3) Using and leveraging broadband for civic engagement and social justice.
Senior policymakers from the White House, Congress, the FCC, and industry engaged with civil rights and policy leaders on the direction the nation should take in achieving ubiquitous broadband access. FCC Chairman Genachowski provided remarks during the conference (read the Chairman’s remarks here), as did U.S. Representatives Bobby Rush (IL) and Cliff Stearns (FL). FCC Commissioners also addressed the MMTC crowd and weighed in on such issues as universal service reform, net neutrality, and spectrum allocation.
Leaders within the Hispanic community, including the League of United Latin American Citizens Executive Director Brent Wilkes; Executive Director, Jason Llorenz, of the Hispanic Technology and Telecommunications Partnership; and State Senator Iris Martinez (IL), President of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators – among others – were also in attendance.
